Meet the Maker: Jani Hileman

About Jord’s Hoard

Jord’s Hoard is a small business selling handmade goods inspired by nature in Baltimore, MD. Jord’s Hoard is owned and run by multidisciplinary artist Jani Hileman. Jord’s Hoard sprung from Jani’s love of the natural world and an insatiable desire to make interesting things.

The word Jord (or Jörð, pronounced Yord) is derived from norse mythology. It is the name of a goddess or giantess, meaning Earth. Jani’s products, though mostly made of clay, also come from plants, bones, and other natural materials. They are made from and inspired by the hoard of the Earth.

What are Jord’s Hoard products made of?

Good question! Most pieces are made of clay! Jani creates with porcelain, stoneware and polymer clay. Each item is entirely unique, made by hand slowly in small batches. Jani fires her work locally in Baltimore, Maryland in various shared kilns.

Why are they called Vegan Bones?

All of the Vegan Bone decorations and jewelry are cast from an original, real bone that was gathered sustainably. Jani finds and cleans up the real bones, then makes plaster molds to reproduce the object in clay. The final product is entirely porcelain, fired locally in a woodkiln .

What do you mean by Native Plant Pottery?

All of the Native Plant pots are hand-pressed with real plants native to the Maryland Piedmont. The plants are gathered responsibly from local sources. All mugs, cups, bowls and plates carry a unique impression of a real native plant!
